Chapter Nine

Harper

Dangerous.

There was no other word to describe the roughhewn agent. Everything about Stone was electrifying, the yin and yang of his personality keeping me on edge. I realized I was brushing the tip of my finger across my lips, memories of his rugged and commanding kisses keeping the embers burning hot deep within.

I giggled like some damn schoolgirl with a crush on a man that was definitely no good for me. The both of us were caught in a vacuum, unable to think clearly enough to figure out a way out of this mess.

If there was one.

I stood at the window, a cup of lukewarm coffee in my hand, watching Stone chopping more wood. While we’d gone through several pieces in the raging fires, I knew the task was done as a tool.

He needed to get me out of his head.

Maybe I required the exact same thing. My mind was blurry, confused as to why I’d allow him to get close in the first place, even admitting my most horrific memory. Did I feel sorry for him? Then again, how could I not given the stories he’d allowed me to hear?

The snow was tapering off, but the clouds still looked ominous, a mass of gray and white swirling together. If only we could hear a weather report. Then what? Canada on foot? That terrified me even more than the notion of being caught. He was right, I wouldn’t have survived on my own and certainly couldn’t in this kind of a storm.

I hadn’t paid any attention, nor had I asked any questions about the route the pilot was taking. Whether or not we were truly in Montana remained a good question and where? The mountain ranges were hundreds of miles wide. The kind of remote cabin we’d found certainly wasn’t supposed to be accessed in the winter. By all accounts, the pilot veered off course a solid fifty miles. Any rescue teams could be looking in the wrong place.

While Stone had his own fears about the Red Devils finding us, I knew that was next to impossible. They weren’t skilled trackers. Damn it, if only we had the evidence that Stone had collected.

I glanced back at the iPad and sighed. I wish I’d been given the actual arrest report. Maybe he’d resisted being taken into custody, even trying to escape. Maybe he’d even gotten violent, forcing them to use an alternative method of keeping a man of his size in line.

Shit. That was bullshit.

It didn’t matter what he’d done; using a cattle prod wasn’t allowed in any judicial system.

He could be lying.

I was no expert on scars and he had been stationed overseas, his unit experiencing several combat missions; however, the wounds were fresh. I was going on my instinct alone. What had occurred behind thick cinderblock walls had been criminal in nature, almost as much as the crime itself he’d been accused of committing. I took another sip and could barely swallow. The coffee seemed stale, bitter in my mouth.
